1-2 The ranks lead from left to right, they are also called horizontals.
The files are from bottom to top or verticals.

3-4 diagonals are the squares of a color, with the "corners glued together", they go diagonally and can be short and long.

5-6 The king may never go on an attacked square. Two kings never meet!

7-8 An attacked king "is in check", here you should find the square(s) where the king can save himself with his own move. Of course, the king can also hit a piece himself.

9-10 Simply look for the king's moves.

11 We already know the rook, now the white rook wants to " check ", i.e. attack the king.

12 All white pieces are on their way here with giving checks.

13-16 No problem any more, you know the king now quite well.

17 We will deal with the checks giving and defense separately, here you can see that there are 3 possibilities: escape, capture and interrupt.

18 Sometimes it's your turn, but there isn't one and the king isn't in check. This is called a stalemate.
We will deal with this again in a later topic.

The bishops are standing guard, so don't step on an attacked field!
